Road to Provincials – 32 Weeks Out

Weight: 217.5

In May 2013 I competed in my first bodybuilding competition as a physique athlete. While I placed well enough to advance to the provincial level, I didn’t prepare as long as I should have and I came in less lean than I would have liked and I ultimately placed lower than where I feel I could have if I had taken the process more seriously. While I said my goal was to simply compete once to try it out and be better suited to train other athletes for such competitions, I ended up having a really good time and found myself extremely motivated to come back and try my luck again. I’ve been working hard and trying to improve on the physique I brought last time around but I still find myself lacking some drive at times and I want to turn it back up to make sure I finish this off season and next prep as best as possible.

I’m about 8 months out from the Toronto Pro Show and for anyone who’s ever tried to set a long term goal, you know it’s not always easy to stay motivated and focused when your competition date (or vacation, or photo shoot, etc.) is so far down the road. To help keep me on track I’ve decided to document the entire process (all 231 days of it) and update it on social media as I go. This way 1) I will have all of you guys to help keep me accountable when I feel like slipping up, 2) I will be able to share the ups and downs that I face along the way to show people that it’s not always a sweet journey along the way and 3) I’ll be forced to be more of a presence online since I royally suck at keeping up with my social media right now!

So the goal is to post a daily blog – something short and brief to provide a little insight as to how I’m feeling, how my training went for the day and any other personal thoughts/reflections that might be going through my head. In addition to this, I plan to upload a video at the end of each week where I will discuss the positives and negatives of the previous week along with how I’m feeling overall and maybe even a few goals that I plan to tackle during the upcoming week.

Lastly, to keep everyone up to speed with exactly what I’m doing, I’m going to continually update you with the programs I’m following in the gym (video clips from my workouts when possible), the meal plans I’m maintaining in the kitchen and progress pictures and weight changes along the way.

The ultimate goal of this process is to help me improve my own self discipline and maybe help motivate others that follow my journey along the way. Since I’ve been personal training for so many years and I’ve always lead a fairly healthy and active lifestyle, I find that a lot of people assume I eat perfectly and train optimally day in and day out but unfortunately that just isn’t the case. I’m here to work on that side of things for myself but also to show people that we all struggle, we all have our strengths and weaknesses and we all have our own unique challenges and obstacles we must overcome to be the person we want to be and the person we try to show on the outside – including me.

Hopefully these next 32 weeks inspire others to make some positive changes with their own lives and simultaneously helps get me into the best shape of my life for when I step on stage next June and try to advance to the national level.

With all that said, at the end of this post is my first progress picture that I plan to upload every Saturday. These are going to be taken first thing in the morning so please excuse the ugly mug and bed head!
